million times in our videos but today we’re gonna give you the basics of what we’re doing to win with snippet optimization Ricky’s coming over are they in fact there yes and we’re gonna do it but we thought we’d do a little barbecue and enjoy some spring weather as we do it so ready for your burger ah dude what are you doing down there there’s a hole in your deck oh yeah I mean I built a night this was a lot of work you just so you know I built 95 percent of a deck it’s like 75 feet long one hole and that’s what you want to complain about I don’t know it seems kind of important to me like 95 percent of a deck is dangerous but so is doing 95% of the work of getting your content to show up on Google which is what you do writing a blog post could be taking you upwards of six hours but if you don’t spend just a few minutes to create content specifically designed to win 
The Google snippet it’s a lot like building 95% of a deck seventy six percent of searches are going to have a featured snippet on them and so everybody has been focused on backlinks and this weird process for keyword research and all this stuff and we’ve really been focusing on winning those snippets and this is why you can jump the freaking line of everybody else everybody else is spending hours writing their blog post and then they just press publish you taking that little five minutes and finishing out your deck can jump the line even if other pages organically would be beat your page in the rankings because you wrote the best two or three sentence summary of the topic to the top the rings and we’re gonna teach you how to do it we do that by actually writing answer target an answer target is an answer to the main search query that we write that is formatted and written in such a way to encourage Google to use it as 
The snippet there’s not like some secret like meta tag or something you an use to alert Google there’s no schema that lets Google know that this is supposed to be a snippet we just write it in the right way that entices Google to use it yeah so this this technique that we’ve really pioneered of creating these answer targets in our posts was totally unique at the time that we were we thought we spent so much time analyzing as snippets became more prevalent how is Google choosing out of 2530 500 words in this blog post how oes it select which sentence or two is the snippet and we started to see some significant patterns in how it was choosing those sentences and so we started making our answer targets designed to do to meet those parameters and it was working to the point where we  spent a bunch of time several of us going through on our websites trying to find a single instance where we wrote an answer target Google gave us the snippet but their snippet was different than the answer target right so like think about it same point out of underwear blog of those words 

we can I mean almost 100 we couldn’t find a single instance where it didn’t happen we grabbed the sentence other than the one that we intend in some cases they’ll take our snippet that or our answer target as the snippet and then they’ll add some of our subheadings as well as they’ll add other that’s totally normal but in every single case if we won the snippet it was with the answer target that we intended to be to snip it and everybody else is making a blog post look on publish and not paying attention to this incredible opportunity okay like I think we’ve set the stage now how we get into how we are doing this yeah it’s so exciting yeah so the first thing that we want to with you is teeing up the answer target so we’ve done this forever in our post recipe you can go back to our video the one where Ricky goes on the dirt bike ride that one where we talk about what the first couple sentences of a blog post should be and that really should be one establishing rapport with the with the user 
the reader of the content sure but you’re teeing up the content you’re saying I have the answer to this question you’re providing additional context around the answer and so what does that tell Google it says hey the answers coming in the next sentence right what we used to do is we used to restate the question right before the answer and for a while that worked really effectively we told our project 24 members when we no longer recommended that and there are some good reasons why but the reason we’ve done that is we notice FAQ pages we’re doing really well and why because it says question answer and so you’re essentially doing that same thing not restating the question not in a weird you weird thing that would mess up the user experience but you’re teeing it up and telling Google this is what I’m about to talk about and then bang and there comes the answer target the next thing that we do whenever we create especially like these paragraph style answer targets right which by the way make up half of all featured snippets in the study that we just did we we just spent a bunch of time guys putting together study gathering data over 30 man-hours 
that we spent putting together and analyzing this data and we found that in about 50% of well actually it was exactly 50% of cases it was a paragraph style answer snippet yeah so that’s something we need to mention is there are four different types of featured snippets and if it’s that we can win and that includes the paragraph style and that’s what we’re going to talk about in this YouTube videos at this YouTube video but project 24 members go log in today because today just dropped our new course on snippet optimization where we’re talking about how to win each one of these plus I mean some pretty ninja stuff that goes in there so you guys will love that Roger 24 members go check it out right now so we’re talking about paragraph style snippets right now but they’re also list style that are very common video style snippets and table style snippets that I’m bullish on the humble table style snippet you don’t see them very much percentage-wise but 

I think there’s a reason and I think if we create them I think we can win them but when we do create these answer targets it’s a good idea to format them in a way where they stand out it can be as simple as just making that short paragraph bold one is yes it’ll help it stand out for the reader which is a really nice user experience by the way it’s nice to be able to find your answer very easily but also when you bold it puts a tag around it that lets Google know this is important this is standout content and so it the AI sees it and it’s more likely to feature that and again we go into this end of the course but we do see places where Google is paying attention to how that particular text that you make as an answer target is formatted to decide what goes there so I do think the bold X is a significant okay so formatting is one now the next is it has to be standalone so what we don’t want to do is have you know just we can make easy mistakes that can just absolutely destroy your answer target something as simple so keep reading form or what you’re not winning it you’re gone 
Google doesn’t want to show that on the search page things that say like yes or no at the big at the beginning of it it’s like well we didn’t have the question that’s not standalone and it depends how we phrased the question if it should be yes or no right so that should that snot stand alone it shouldn’t start with a sentence like it or they because that refers to something before we need the noun to start this thing so make sure that that answer target is a standalone answer the next one is to write it in a style like Wikipedia or an encyclopedia for those of you who are older than 30 yeah a whole set on a bookshelf anyway you should write it in a style that is I wouldn’t necessarily say overly formal but definitely not casual don’t use slang don’t 

I mean don’t inject a ton of personality into this paragraph just write it in a matter-of-fact way that kind of content is the content Google wants to show if it looks like opinion if it looks like it the accuracy is maybe questionable you’re not going to win a snippet with that piece of content if you want to add a little flavor to your snippet writing make that flavor vanilla if this to the point and semi-formal absolutely so project 24 members go log in the courses there for you right now I’m really excited for you guys to go checkm it out and everybody if you’re making content online right now it’s time to finish your deck hey Jim hey what’s up not too much okay I can read you that because I didn’t sell it very well it’s not that bad well I didn’t I didn’t yeah I didn’t act it very well either but you did that was a good jump
